Elisabeth Mann Borgese

Attorney, Writer
1918 (München)–2002 (St. Moritz Switzerland)

The favorite child of the great writer was immortalized in literary form at a young age in "Gesang vom Kindchen" and in the novella about the Weimar hyperinflation "Disorder and Early Sorrow" (Unordnung und frühes Leid). As a young girl in 1933, Elisabeth accompanied the Manns into exile. The idea of becoming a pianist quickly vanished following an early marriage. For many decades she led an inconspicuous life in the shadow of her exciting siblings Klaus and Erika, and was active in various institutions whose work promoted the global aim of mankind. She finally discovered her passion in 1967: protecting the world's oceans against endangerment through the depletion and exploitation by a humanity seemingly oblivious to nature. She was the only female member of the Club of Rome in 1971.
