Fritz Stern

Historian
1926 (Breslau)–2016 (New York, USA)

The fate of his family turned into a life-long topic of research; the burning question of why "the universal potential of human beings for evil became reality in Germany." As a child in 1938, he was forced to leave school in Breslau; various indignities preceded the Sterns' departure for America. However, the young historian decided in the 1950s to make modern German history his speciality. He became the major American authority on Germany and a much sought-after consultant by the US government, honored as a wise mediator between the two historical cultures on both sides of the Atlantic.
