Those who have read her texts will never forget the crystalline, poetic conciseness of her language. Hilde Spiel embodied every good tradition of the Viennese, Jewish, educated upper class: encyclopedic knowledge, curiosity and cosmopolitanism. In 1936, the highly gifted – and highly perceptive – author turned her back on an Austria which had become increasingly anti-Semitic and fascist and left for London. Following 1945, she commuted between the old and the new homeland – European essay literature owes some of its most inspired books to the special distance between the two cultures. In her novel Lisas Zimmer, she deals exemplarily with the subjects of displacement and exile
