Peter Zadek

Peter Zadek

Director, Theater Intendant
1926 (Berlin)–2009 (Hamburg)

He was born in the middle of the 1920s to a well-off Jewish family in Berlin. His realistic father moved the family to England already in 1933. The young Zadek grew up in London and Oxford and found his calling early on; the theater: "Acting is my way of life." It was Zadek's luck, but most of all a stroke of luck for the German theater, that the brilliant director was "imported" to Germany in 1958. Zadek revolutionized the bourgeois state theaters, confronted classic with boulevard and popular music elements, and blended the sublime, the shocking, the garish and the ironic into provoking experiences.
