Sascha und Ludwig Marcuse

1905 (Berlin)–1967 (Bad Wiessee)
Journalist
1894 (Berlin)–1971 (Bad Wiessee)

Following retirement, Ludwig Marcuse returned to Germany from exile in Califorinia after teaching young Americans German literature and philosophy for many years. Berlin, where he had led a stimulating life as a controversial journalist and critic in the 1920s, no longer attracted him – the fascinating, turbulent cultural metropolis of that bygone era was irretrievably lost. Marcuse found his last home, of all places, on Tegernsee in Bavaria. But it most likely made no difference where this pessimistic philosopher of happiness, this defender of the individual against the collective body, this Enlightener who did not know disappointment and friend of all non-conformists, sat at his desk.
