A Suitcase for the Archives – Artists in Exile
London – Palestine – Shanghai
The second edition of the series ‘A suitcase for the archive’ is dedicated to three artists in exile: John Heartfield, Ellen Auerbach and David Ludwig Bloch. How did their experiences in exile in London, Palestine and Shanghai influence their work, which encompasses such diverse media as porcelain painting and photomontage?
Rosa von der Schulenburg and Anna Schultz open the suitcase they bring and show original objects from the archive of the Akademie der Künste, Berlin. Look over the archivists' shoulders and hear the stories behind some of the unique pieces: What do they tell about the years in exile, how did they survive the unsettled times and how did they finally end up in the Academy's archive in Berlin?
