German Exile Theatre in the Soviet Union 1935–1937
With the event series ‘A Suitcase for the Archive’ at the Werkstatt Exilmuseum, the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, opens a suitcase and provides insights into the estates of artists who were forced to flee from the Nazis into exile. Original documents, photos, sketches and notes tell us about artistic existences in a new country. Have a look over the archivists' shoulders and hear the stories behind some of the unique pieces: What do they tell about the years in exile, how did they survive the unsettled times and how did they finally end up in the Academy's archive in Berlin?
The evening is dedicated to German-language theatre in exile in the Soviet Union, the actors, stages, performances and audience reactions. The objects brought along shed light on the imponderables on location, the improvisational talent of the theatre ensembles as well as the end of these theatre projects in 1937.
